Obituary for James Eugene Spence

James Eugene  Spence
On Thursday, November 5th, Heaven gained an incredible angel, Jim Spence. To those who knew and loved him, his death came too soon. He was born on January 23, 1941 in Yuma, Arizona to Gene and Lydia Spence. Jim graduated from Quincy High School in 1959 and married his high school sweetheart, Vonnie Burns, on June 9, 1962. Vonnie and Jim were married for 53 years and raised four children, Jeff, Todd, Julie, and Marci. In addition to the love of his life Vonnie, his children and grandchildren were his world.

Jim attended Central Washington University earning a BA Degree in Education, and MA Degree in Education Administration at Whitworth University in Spokane, WA. He taught in East Wenatchee, Royal City and Quincy, Washington. During his career in Quincy he was the head basketball coach, Athletic Director, Vice Principal, and Principal. Jim retired in 1998 and received the WVATA Administrator of the Year award for District IX. He was inducted to the Washington State Athletic Director's Hall of Fame in 2004. Jim continued his love for teaching by becoming a round dance cuer and instructor. He was a member of the Appleland Promenaders, and the Plus Bunch in Wenatchee. He cued for many dance weekends and festivals throughout the state. At the State Square Dance Festival in 2015, Jim received the Washington State Cuer of the Year Award.

Jim is survived by his wife, Vonnie; son Jeff and Katrina Spence of Quincy; son Todd and Laurie Spence of Spokane; daughter Julie and Rusty Soelter of Quincy; daughter Marci and Erik Peterson of East Wenatchee; grandchildren, Ashley, Justin, Caden, and Kenzie Spence; Paxton, Carson and Aliyah Spence; Addison and Hannah Soelter; Sarah and Gunnar Peterson; great grandchildren, Tierney and Jace Spence. Brother, Larry and Kathy Spence. As well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Holy rosary will be recited at 5:30 P.M. on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Quincy. A celebration of Jim's life will be on Friday, November 13, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Quincy, WA. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the Quincy Booster Club PO Box 277, Quincy, WA 98848
