Obituary for Clifton (Pete) A Whyte Jr.

Clifton (Pete) A Whyte Jr.
Clifton A. (Pete) Whyte, Jr., formerly of Quincy, son of Clifton A. Whyte, Sr. and Helen Kent Whyte, was born in Washington DC on May 10, 1927. He died in Wenatchee from dementia complications on September 28, 2016.

He was a WWII and Korean War Veteran. During his WWII service, while on board the USS Niagara, he participated in Operation Crossroads (Bikini) atom bomb exercises where both an air and water bombs were detonated. After his discharge he returned to Winthrop, ME and attended Kents Hill Prep School and it was at this time he met Barbara.

Pete married Barbara Matthews on June 5, 1947 in Waterville, ME. He was working in Boston when their daughter Lynda Sue was born. They eventually returned to ME where their daughter Cheryl Anne was born. At that time Pete was managing a hardware store in Manmouth, ME. As he was a member of the Augusta Seabee Reserves Uncle Sam recalled him to serve in the Korean War where he spent his time in Adak, AK. After returning home he started training under the GI bill as a heavy equipment operator. He worked many different construction jobs in ME and it was at this time that their son Clifton Edgar was born. His occupation eventually took Pete and his family to many different parts of the country including working on the NY Thruway and the Plattsburg Air Force Base, where at this time their son Fredrick M. (Rick) was born. From there it was on to the St. Lawrence Seaway where he worked for Merrit, Chapman and Scott. Once that job was completed he was transferred to Page, AZ where he worked on the Glen Canyon Dam and eventually to work on Priest Rapids Dam in WA. He and his family made their home in Quincy in 1958. Once the dam was completed he went to work for Bridge Construction Co. erecting the steel girders on the west side of the Vantage Bridge. As his wish was to remain in the area he applied for a position with the Grant County PUD where he eventually became Maintenance Supervisor for both Wanapum and Priest Rapids Dams. He worked for the PUD for 28 years, retiring in 1989.

In his younger years he enjoyed many of the activities and cultural centers available in Washington D.C. He always had many stories to tell of those days including the egg rolls on the White House lawn where he met Eleanor Roosevelt. He also was present at a couple of President Roosevelt's inaugurations.

His grandparents owned a summer home on Lake Maranacook in Winthrop, ME where he enjoyed most of his summers as a youngster. Even though he was not a born Mainer he always thought of it as home. When Pete was 15 his dad was commissioned as a Lt. Commander in the navy and stationed in Bermuda. As they did not have education beyond the 8th grade he returned to Winthrop to stay with friends so he could attend high school. When his father was sent to the Pacific his mother and sister joined him in Winthrop until he joined the navy at age 17.

After Pete and his family settled in Quincy, he became involved in youth baseball. This was one of his passions as were young people. At that time they were not involved with the National Little League so he personally solicited help from the merchants to ensure this could take place. He worked as a coach in Little League and Babe Ruth for many years.

Pete was one of the Police Commissioners of Quincy for 20 years, he left his position in 1989 when he retired and he and Barbara started wintering in FL. The bought a home in Zephyrhills where they enjoyed all the various activities that FL has to offer for 19 years.

Pete loved golf, bridge, traveling and story telling all being secondary to his family. He and Barbara traveled to many places in the world such as Fiji, Europe, the Caribbean Islands, Bermuda, Mexico and many of the Canadian Provinces. They visited every state in the United States. They enjoyed 7 cruises that allowed them to visit many other foreign countries.

Pete is survived by his wife of 69 years Barbara of Wenatchee, his son Fredrick (Rick) (Georgina), of Orting, WA, daughters, Lynda Sue of Medical Lake, WA and Cheryl (Wilfried) Isaacs of Bellingham, WA, his sister Joan Whyte Fenno of Portland, ME, his nephew Lee (Lisa) Crosslin, of Wenatchee 5 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren, other nephews and nieces and his loving canine friend Sami.

He was preceded in death by his son Clifton Edgar.
