Obituary for Dena Hooyer

Dena  Hooyer
Dena Hooyer from Quincy, Washington, passed away on June 18 at the age of 96. She left this life for a better place with her husband Mike and her family that has gone before her. She was born on October 5, 1920, in Rock Valley, Iowa, to John and Jeanette Harmelink. She attended school in Rock Valley.

On February 14, 1940, she married Mike Hooyer. Mike and Dena lived on farms in Iowa and Minnesota until January 1957 when they moved to Quincy, Washington. Dena worked as a mother of seven children, housewife, newspaper delivery woman, clerk at Vordahl’s Department Store, and school kitchen worker. She was active in Quincy Homemaker’s Club, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, and the Do Day Ladies which donates quilts to Lutheran World Relief. In 1968, she received her G.E.D. Dena was also a long-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and sang in the choir.

Dena was preceded in death by her husband, Mike, in 1983. She is survived by her seven children and their spouses: David Hooyer (Carlyn), Bainbridge Island, WA; Janice Gardner (Gordon), Port Angeles, WA; Anthony Hooyer (Joni), Anchorage, AK; Dennis Hooyer (Christine), Ephrata, WA; Michael Hooyer (Louise), Anchorage, AK; Timothy Hooyer (Denise), Tall Timbers, MD; and Dianne Howe (Darrell), Lomita, CA; seventeen grandchildren; twelve great grand-children; her sister Minnie Van Noort; her brother Vernon Harmelink; and her sister Jo Young.

An internment service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 24, at the Quincy Valley Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Quincy at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice, Central Columbia Senior Living dba The Cambridge, or the Do Day Ladies at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
