Obituary for Alfred Lind

Al Lind of Quincy went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 10, 2010 leaving his wife, Helen of 64 years and two sons Gordy of Othello and Clark of Yakima.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Roger in 1965 and Randy in 1993.

Al was born in McGrew, NE on January 1, 1918, he moved to Batesland SD at the age of 5, went through 8 years of school in a 1 room school house. He lived there on the farm until 1940 when he moved to Wyola, MT to farm with his Dad.

Al was called to serve in the U.S. Army on Feb. 14, 1942; he was a gunner and tank commander on a M7 tank with 2 105 mm howitzer. He went through the campaign in North Africa, then on into Sicily, where he was captured by the Germans, 3 days before the fall of Sicily, when his tank was blown up, he received a Purple Heart for his wounds. He was held in various camps in Germany for over 22 months. Al survived the Death March in February, 1945 in severe winter weather.
One son served in the Navy during Vietnam War and two grandsons one the Army and one in the Air Force. One served in Desert Storm and one in Desert Storm and Iraq four times.

After returning to the States in September, 1945 he married Helen Needens of Sheridan, WY and they had 4 boys. He bought a farm in Columbus, MT then back to ranch in Wyoming then to Clyde Park, MT, then to Wilsall, MT in 1956. He moved his family to George where they cleared their farm of sagebrush, later they bought more land. He had to retire in 1978 account of his injuries but he didn’t sell the farms until 1982 and 1998 when they moved to Quincy and had the house built he lived in until his death.

He was a proud member of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, making over 500 quilt tops. Al also loved to travel with the motor home which they did one to three months of the year. Mainly traveling to Florida, California and Arizona to different resorts they were members of.

Viewing will be held at Scharbach’s Columbia Funeral Chapel in Quincy on Tuesday, September 14, 2010 from 1:00 PM until 7:00 PM

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at Christ the Savior Luther Church, 214 Deacon Street, George, concluding services will follow in the Quincy Valley Cemetery.
