Condolence From: Jess Slusher
Condolence: I remember Zane as a child growing up on the Frenchman Hills. My father, 'Doc' Slusher planted an orchard at about the same time as Zane. If I remember right, they were the first two orchardists on Frenchman Hills. My dad told me once that folks thought they were crazy for planting orchards on the hills since everything at that time was in the Wenatchee Valley. Zane Newton, Jake Weber - an earlier apple growwer on Babcock Ridge near Quincy, were names I often heard from my Dad. He respected these men for their pioneering efforts in the budding fruit industry in the Quincy Valley. Now our valley is known for being one of the best areas in the world for apple production.
There used to be an orchard tour several times a year sponsored by the Grant County Extension Service. Ray Hunter was the man who led the tours that demonstrated growing techniques for growers new to the industry. Specialists in planting, pruning, pest control, thinning, etc. would demonstrate their skills in growing quality fruit. We visited Zane's orchard a couple of times during those years. Once I remember Tree Top came with an ice chest full of apple juice for everyone. That put Zane's orchard on the map for a 10 year old like myself.
Zane and his family are members of a pioneer generation in our fruit industry. I'm grateful for all they brought to our valley.
