Obituary for Darrell B Van Dyke

Darrell Bryce Van Dyke, age 64, passed away at Swedish Hospital on Wednesday, November 9th, 2016 surrounded by his family. Darrell was born on March 28, 1952 in Lethbridge Alberta to Ralph and Bertha (Van Gaalen) Van Dyke. Darrell had a strong faith in God. His motto was, “for His glory.”

When Darrell was nine, he and his family moved to Quincy, Washington. He graduated from Quincy High School in 1970. After attending Central Washington University for a short time, he returned home to Quincy to buy his own 80 acre farm and begin his life-long career. Darrell lived on the original 80 acres, on Road 9, from the time he purchased it in 1972. Farming was one of Darrell’s many joys. He was proud of his farm and willing to try new technologies in the field. He was always willing to share his knowledge of farming with others, and helped many young farmers start their careers.

Darrell met his wife Ann in 1982 at the Sale Barn in Winchester. They were married in 1988 in Hawaii. Together they had two beautiful children, Alyssa and Blake.

Darrell had racing in his blood and shared his hobby with his family. Anything fast he raced, including snowmobiles, boats, race cars, and Mini Indies. In particular he raced a 1997 Ford Mustang funny car, “The Rattler.” Darrell and The Rattler won the Lilac, Fox Hunt, and World Finals in 1999. Darrell also had a passion for flying, which led him to get his pilot’s license early in life. He lived for adventure and whatever life brought him.

Darrell was not only a hardworking farmer; he had many different interests. In 1978, he started selling Christmas trees. He also obtained his realtors license, which help him expand his business. In 1994, Darrell and his family opened Blakal Packing, Inc. Many of Darrell’s potatoes were processed through this plant. The original shed suffered a devastating fire in March of 2001, but Darrell preserved and rebuilt the plant immediately. The new shed was up and running in 2003.

Darrell was very involved in the Quincy community. While raising his children, he coached little league. Later in life, he served on the Quincy Hospital Board. He was a generous man, who supported many events and activities in Quincy. Darrell and his family were Farm Family of the Year in 2015.

He is survived by his wife Ann and children Alyssa (Bryan) and Blake (Ciara); his grandchildren Dallas, Alex, Braxton, Stella; his brothers Murray (Carol), Arvin, and Dale (Bonnie).
Darrell was preceded in death by his parents.

A celebration of his life service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at the Van Dyke Executive Center, 124 D Street SW, Quincy, WA
