Obituary for Sharon Louise "Toby" Seibert (Tidwell)

Sharon Louise "Toby" Seibert (Tidwell)
Sharon Louise (Tidwell) Seibert, better known to family and friends as Toby or Nana, passed away August 24, 2017, from leukemia.

She was born on November 4, 1930, to John Leslie and Ida Geraldine (Carson) Tidwell while the family lived on a farm in Nampa, Idaho. She lived there with two of her siblings until she was five when her family moved to Homedale, Idaho. She attended school there and graduated from Homedale High School in 1947.

She attended Brigham Young University (Provo, UT), transferred to North Idaho College of Education (now Lewis and Clark State University, Lewiston, ID), and then to Eastern Washington College of Education (now Eastern Washington University, Cheney, WA), graduating in 1954.

She began her teaching career in Clarkston, WA. She also taught in Grandview, WA, Henderson, NV, Spokane, WA, Newhall-Saugus, CA, Prosser, WA, and Quincy, WA. She retired in 1992 after 38 years in the teaching and school counseling professions. She served as a mentor to both students and peers and maintained relationships with many of them over the years. She coached middle school track for many years. Toby was a spelling bee advisor and chaperoned a finalist speller to the Champion Spelling Bee in Washington, DC.

In 1957, she married Jessie L. Seibert and from that union three daughters were born—Chalky, Winter, and Hollie. They divorced in 1982. She lived on the family farm until 2003 when she moved into Ephrata. She was proud of her daughters and loved to brag about her six grandchildren.

Toby lived an active and a fruitful life in many different areas. For many summers when her daughters were growing up, she led rogueing crews that provided numerous high schoolers summer jobs and farmers with a pure seed crop for harvesting. She was very active in the LDS church with many calls at the ward and stake levels. Additionally, Toby worked in the Seattle temple for two years. She also served as an officer in Club 71 (an organization for wives of local farmers) for many years—even after she moved off the farm and into town.

Bingo was Toby’s signature mark amongst friends and relatives. She hosted countless Bingo parties through the years that brought joy and laughter to those who came. Her two hobbies in life were reading and her grandkids. Toby exchanged books with friends and loved to follow what was going on in the lives of her grandchildren. Between 5:00 and 6:00 pm you would invariably find Toby watching the news.

She was well-loved by her family and friends. Toby had a wonderful sense of humor with the ability to laugh at herself with others. Her generosity of spirit, heart, and pocketbook were a blessing and an inspiration to many. Despite various setbacks in life, Toby had an abiding cheerfulness and enjoyed life. The joy in her heart, her generous spirit, and her interest in the people in her life and the world around her will be missed by all who knew her.

Toby was preceded in death by her parents and four of her six siblings. She is survived by her three daughters: Chalky (Greg) Monson, Winter (Hank Heschle) Seibert, and Hollie (Lee) Lackey; six grandchildren: Trygg, Brandt, and Stenn Monson, Greer (Chris) Jones, and Christian and Carson Heschle; two siblings: Jerry (Lorinda) Tidwell and Ardith Parsons; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Toby will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at the Ephrata Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1301 E Division Ave. Viewing will be at 10:00 am and the service at 11:00 am. A luncheon at the church will follow the graveside interment at the Ephrata Cemetery.
