Obituary for Maxine E Fleming

Maxine (Tiny) Fleming passed away Nov. 6, 2018, at the age of 98 in Quincy, at her daughter Jeanne Range’s home.

Maxine (Nelson) Fleming was born to Martin and Anna Nelson in Portland, Oregon, on April 7, 1920. As a baby, Maxine’s older sister, Marjorie Nelson Kasch Baird, named Maxine “Tiny Baby,” and this nickname was later shortened to Tiny.

Maxine attended school in Portland, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1938. During high school, Maxine asserted she was a great volleyball player, something she would brag about often.

Tiny grew up with many cousins and together they enjoyed skating at a nearby roller rink. She later enjoyed skating with several of her grandkids.

Maxine married Paul Fleming on Oct. 1, 1942. Together they lived in Portland, Oregon, and Alberta, Canada and ultimately moved to Snoqualmie, Washington, in 1948.

Maxine worked at the Snoqualmie Post Office for many years before retiring in 1982. Maxine was active on the Snoqualmie Library Board including serving as treasurer for many years.

Following her retirement, Maxine attended Seattle Central Community College to refine her sewing and tailoring skills. While at SCCC, she made many friends and these friendships lasted long past her six years attending classes. Maxine also liked knitting, which she continued to do until her death.

Maxine’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren have many lasting memories of visiting her at Crescent Bar. Here they learned to golf and swim as well as eat many of grandma’s special foods (navy beans and ham hocks, clam chowder and waffles).

One of Maxine’s favorite things was having outdoor fires, and the Snoqualmie Fire Department could attest to that. She was often observed burning away blackberry bushes behind her house in Snoqualmie, alarming everyone but herself.

Maxine is survived by her four children, Joe (Lynn) Fleming, Anita Berosek, Paulette Fleming and Jeanne (David Bishop) Range, and seven grandchildren, Kathy (Mark) Decker, Sandy (Mark) Brown, Karlina (Sean) Hoisington, Casey (Jon) Hamar, Chris (Elke) Alston, Kelly (Natalie) Range and Alaina Alston. She also has 11 great-grandchildren.

Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Paul, parents Martin and Anna Nelson, sisters Marvil Nelson and Marjorie Baird, brother Richard Borsch, sons-in-law Larry Gildersleeve and Pete Range, and one great-grandson.

At her request there will be no funeral service. Donations may be made to Public Broadcasting System (PBS) in her honor.

The family would like to especially thank Assured Hospice of Moses Lake for their outstanding care during Maxine’s final weeks.

Scharbach's Columbia Funeral Chapel, Quincy, assisted the family with arrangements.
