Obituary for John Daniel English

John Daniel English
John Daniel English passed away on Oct. 24, 2010 in Moses Lake, WA. He was born on May 15, 1930 to Florence (Strasburg) and Chester English in Michigan N.D. When Florence went in to labor at the family farm, she sent eldest son Gerald to get the neighbor to help. Baby John a.k.a. “Jackie” was kept warm in a shoe box placed near the wood stove. John joined brothers Gerald, Robert, and sister Kathryn.
The family moved to Montana, where Chester was employed in the oil fields. The family lived at the Texaco Camp, near Cut Bank. John graduated from Cut Bank High in 1948. He enlisted in the United States Navy in Jan. 1951. After spending too many winters in the bitter cold climate of Cut Bank, he couldn’t believe his luck when he learned he would be stationed at the Naval Base in San Diego. John served 4 years, as a machinist, on the USS Philippine Sea.
John married Norma Day on March 18, 1955 in Cut Bank. Daughter Shelley was born while the couple lived in Cut Bank.
John earned a Business degree at the Univ. of Montana under the G.I. Bill. During this time, daughter Rhea Beth was born in Missoula. Shortly after college, John worked at Montana Bank in Great Falls.
In 1960, John and Norma purchased an Enco franchise, located in Quincy WA. Thus began a new life in the Columbia Basin for the young family. Here, daughters Ronda and Sharon were born. Eventually, John would own this business outright, renaming it Basin Oil Company. John and Norma loved their new community, and cherished the friendships they developed through their many affiliations, some of which were the Jaycees , JCI Senators, Greater Quincy, Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, and of course, the Moose Lodge.

John was always up for a fishing trip, whether it was to one of the local fresh water lakes, on a deep sea charter, or hunting for shell fish on the coast. After selling their business in 1989, John & Norma began spending the winters in Arizona at Lake Martinez. Up until his death, John planned to return to the arid climate, and his friends, down South.
John was preceded in death by his beloved wife Norma, his parents Florence & Chester, his siblings Gerald, Robert, and Kathryn, and his longtime bookkeeper Waldo.
He is survived by his special friend Jan Doyle, his daughters and their husbands: Shelley & Bruce Foreman, Rhea & Gene Hunt, Ronda & Doug Mitch, Sharon & Mark Johnson, grandchildren Brady (Aki), Ryan (Megan), Alyson, Curran, Abigail, Amanda (Brian), Alice, McKenzie, Martie, and great-grandchildren Mia Marie and Marshall.
A celebration of John’s life will take place at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010 at Faith Community Church 1005 - 10th Ave. SW Quincy, WA.
