Obituary for Irene Betty Boorman

Irene Betty Boorman died on Tuesday, July 14, one day after her 96th birthday. She was born in Spokane on July 13, 1924, the oldest of Guy & Pearl Winship’s five children. Betty spent her childhood in Spokane and Greenacres, playing the trombone for the Central Valley High School band and graduating in 1942. She married William “Bill” H. Boorman in December 1944 and had two children, Darrell and Carol. She worked as a switchboard operator in Spokane until 1957, when she and Bill moved to Quincy to farm. In Quincy, she worked at Harold’s Thriftway until she became the timekeeper at Lamb Weston from which she retired in her 80s. She was known for bringing joy to her fellow employees with her bright smile and fun demeanor.

She enjoyed travel, big band concerts, dining out, and always followed her hometown basketball team – Go Zags! She attended the Free Methodist Church, was a member of the Red Hat Society, and was active at the Quincy Senior Center. Thursday night dinner and pinochle at the center was a highlight of her week. She was also known as Grammy Sweetie Pie by her grandchildren and Betty Boop by many, due to the pep in her step. She never missed a weekly beauty shop appointment to get her hair set or an opportunity to partake in dessert; especially if it included chocolate. She had more friends than she could count, never met a stranger, and was always up for a social gathering.

Betty is survived by her brother Glen Winship of Federal Way; her children Darrell Boorman of Spokane and Carol Yeates of Quincy; five granddaughters, Amy and Lindsey Yeates and Tisha, Mandy, and Bryn Boorman; and ten great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Bill Boorman, siblings, Bob, Cork, and Anita, and her beloved grandson, Travis Yeates.

A graveside funeral will be held at Pines Cemetery in Spokane on Friday, July 24th at noon. A memorial service will be held in Quincy at a later date, when we are able to gather in a larger group.
