George and I became friends at West High in Bremerton. George never really liked school and finally convinced his parents to let him join the army. We wrote back and forth while he was first in Germany, and then in Vietnam. When he came home, we continued hanging out together around Bremerton and Tacoma. I have many great stories from that time - road trips to Portland, engine failure in a borrowed boat at dusk in the shipping lanes on Puget Sound, fun parties at his little two room house, and just hanging out after work, or in my case, school. The thing I remember most about George was his generosity. During those years I was mostly in college and couldn't afford to do much, but George always insisted that I be included. When we were out cruising, we always took his maroon Corvette or his gold custom '61 Chev Impala, and George always paid for the gas. When I needed help with something, like fixing my beater car or helping me move, George was always there for me. And it wasn't just me, George did the same for everybody. He truly cared about people. I often think about George and I'm grateful for the good times we had together.
